Be An Ally

“To soar toward what's possible, we must leave behind what's comfortable."

— Cicely Tyson

What is Allyship?

Becoming an ally is a commitment to understand, disrupt, and challenge systemic barriers that hinder Black engagement with Asia. By standing with us, you help amplify Black voices in Asian studies and beyond.

Why Allies Matter

Highlighting Black expertise and talents related to Asia requires support from people outside the Black community.

We need friends and active participants of the US-Asia community to support our mission and help us make the change that we all want to see.

You Have A Role To Play

Examples of Allyship

You recognize that your company has traditionally marketed its Asia career and fellowship opportunities in non-Black spaces. Send the application information to NABEA to include in our monthly newsletter.

""

You and your team need speakers for your company’s upcoming panel discussion related to Asia. Use the NABEA Database to identify, contact, and include speakers from diverse backgrounds.

""

You highlight that your company’s unpaid internship excludes predominantly Black students. Connect your leadership with the NABEA team to explore a joint paid internship program.

""

As a student, you notice that your program lacks resources by Black experts or for Black students. To address this, you share information about NABEA with your department head and distribute NABEA flyers to educate more people on campus about diversity in Asian Studies.
