Film Screening: Refuse + Conversation with the Filmmaker

  • 640 Columbia Road Northwest Washington, DC, 20001 (map)

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, NABEA is partnering with Uncommon Voices Collective for a special film screening and conversation.

Join us for Refuse, a 20-minute short film by Korean American filmmaker Kenneth Chang. The film follows Jonah Chung, a man grappling with grief, substance use, and estrangement from his faith community, whose life is disrupted when something unexpected emerges in the church basement he calls home.

Blending psychological tension with supernatural elements, Refuse explores themes of loss, addiction, stigma, and the complexity of belonging — particularly within faith spaces.

Following the screening, Kenneth Chang will join us for a conversation about the film’s themes, creative process, and the intersection of storytelling, identity, and spirituality.
