“Unique Situations” Protecting BIPOC and Queer Communities in South Korea

Join Us for a NABEA Conversation with Kirsten Keels! As a Princeton graduate and Fulbright Korea Scholar, Kirsten will share insights from her work advocating for marginalized communities abroad. This session will cover the nightlife realities for BIPOC and Queer individuals in South Korea, exploring both the challenges faced and the community-led initiatives striving to build safer, more inclusive environments.

Kirsten will address the context of discrimination faced by BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ people in Korea, experiences often amplified during the COVID-19 outbreak but present long before. In response to incidents where individuals were rejected or harassed in nightlife venues – sometimes dismissed with the phrase "Please excuse our unique situation" – Kirsten recognized the systemic nature of the problem. This led her to create 'Unique Situations: A Community Guide to Nightlife in Korea', a resource aimed at empowering the community.

Whether you are invested in global social justice, interested in the specifics of activism in Korea, or passionate about creating safe spaces for marginalized communities everywhere, this discussion will offer critical perspectives and actionable insights.
