The NABEA Conversation with Kirsten Keels was a powerful and thought-provoking session. As a Princeton graduate and Fulbright Korea Scholar, Kirsten shared her experiences advocating for marginalized communities abroad, focusing on the challenges BIPOC and Queer individuals face in South Korea’s nightlife scene. She also highlighted the community-led efforts to create safer, more inclusive spaces.
Kirsten discussed the systemic discrimination faced by BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals, which became more visible during the COVID-19 pandemic but has long existed. This inspired her to create Unique Situations: A Community Guide to Nightlife in Korea, a resource to empower marginalized communities and shed light on these issues.
The session offered meaningful perspectives on global social justice, activism in Korea, and building safe spaces for all. Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to the conversation!
