Behind the Lens: 35 Years of Black Filmmaking in Japan

We hosted a NABEA Conversation with Regge Life! Attendees stepped into the world of international filmmaking with acclaimed director and educator Regge Life, whose groundbreaking career has spanned film, television, and theater across the U.S. and Japan.

Now a professor of film at Emerson College, Regge reflected on his 35+ years of storytelling—highlighting the experiences of African Americans in Japan, navigating cross-cultural identity, and creating space for diverse voices in global media. From his early days directing for The Cosby Show and Sesame Street to his celebrated documentaries on race and identity in Asia, Regge shared deep insight and wisdom during this conversation.

We sincerely thank everyone who came and made this event special!
